Simon van Rysewyk
I like this portrait of LW. It is less severe in the portayal of his character than others of him I have seen, and reveals a warmth not typically associated with the man.
The shade of blue in the eyes is compelling. The overall treatment of the subject in the portrait is rather ragged and indeterminate (e.g. plenty of heavy brush strokes on the cheeks, and rough patches of color around the chin and neck), which does not in the least detract from it, but the eyes are clear and quite sure. There is a sureness of gaze in the face which makes one want to respond positively. Nice.
