My name is Simon van Rysewyk. I am a 36 year-old New Zealander currently teaching English at Shih Hsin University in Taipei, Taiwan.
I aim to begin my PhD in philosophy at the Australian National University in 2009 under Brian Garrett. The focus of my research is on the philosophy of human facial expression, with special reference to Wittgenstein.
The title of the thesis is: 7faces. It features individual papers (‘chapters’) on seven different faces or facial qualities: e.g., facial expression and translucency; facial expression and transparency; facial expression and recognition; memory, and so on. It is hoped that each paper will be publication-ready upon completion of the thesis.

Hi Simon and Shanna.
First of all you are a beautifull family. Congratulations! I am marry too, but cannot have children. My wife is Lucia, she is a Journalist. We live in Brazil, South: Imbituba, Santa Catarina. I am finishing my Phd tesis here in Brazil (Universidade Federal de São carlos in São paulo)
I came to your Blog via Wittgenstein news site in Bergen University. Your blog is linked there, that is great. I am working with Wittgestein philosophy of psychology or philosophical psychology (we will have to write about this difference, don’t you). My aim is explain the afirmation of Wittgenstein that mind isn’t something but that it isn’t nothing too. I try to find/expalin some arguments by explaining the use that Wittgenstein make of “Expression/Audruckeweise”: our inner is expressive. I saw this in your blog in certain pictures that you put here (example: the ciclist groaming – I can see his pain, this is not in his inner world, I see this in her face).
Well taht’s enough. You have my email. I hope you – and family – best wishes.
I cannot built some “decent” blog about my research, when I do this I invite you to be a visitor, OK?
Best Wishes
PS: excuse my rough english!

At the opening of Derek Jarman’s film _Wittgenstein_ a prepubescent Wittgenstein writes “If people did not sometimes do silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done.” This quotation pops up repeatedly on the web and elsewhere, but nobody ever pins it down to a source. Do you or any of the others reading this have any notion where this comes from?
Thanks,
Peter

Dear Peter,
Thanks for the comment. The quote is from Culture and Value by Wittgenstein. I think it was penned in the 1940s. Check it out.
Sincerely,
Simon
